President Joe Biden has voiced alarm over former President Donald Trump’s remarks regarding the potential of “cutting” benefits, placing social security and Medicare at the centre of the presidential campaign debate between the two rivals.

The development could influence the debate around the forthcoming election

“Many of my Republican friends want to put Social Security and Medicare back on the chopping block again,” Biden declared while addressing supporters in New Hampshire.

He said he would resist anyone trying to raise the retirement age or reduce Medicare or Social Security benefits. He said the nation was built by working people.

Drawing attention to the remarks made by former president Donald Trump, regarding the long-term solvency issues of entitlement programmes, Biden stressed, “Even this morning, Donald Trump said cuts to Social Security and Medicare are on the table again. The bottom line is, he’s still at it. I’m never gonna allow that to happen. I won’t cut Social Security. I won’t cut Medicare.”

Even though Donald Trump claimed he was talking about reducing fraud and waste, Biden’s reaction was forceful as he pledged to protect these important programmes that affect millions of Americans.

“First of all,” Trump said on SquawkBox, “there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.”

It is worth mentioning here that, in contrast to some members of his party who supported reforms like raising the retirement age, Trump consistently included cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his White House budget proposals during his administration.
