Chelsea suffered their fourth defeat in six league matches on Sunday, succumbing 2-1 to Wolves in the Premier League’s first Christmas Eve fixture since 1995.

Despite dominating possession at Molineux, Mauricio Pochettino’s team squandered chances in a game marred by defensive errors on their part. Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty scored for Wolves, seemingly securing victory, but Christopher Nkunku’s late goal on his Premier League debut added suspense.

The loss keeps Chelsea in 10th place in the Premier League, with Wolves trailing only on goal difference. Chelsea has faced 19 defeats in the Premier League in 2023, the highest among all teams. Across Europe’s big five leagues, only three teams have suffered more losses this calendar year.

Pochettino expressed disappointment over missed opportunities, citing the team’s lack of clinical finishing. “This competition wounds you when you are not clinical enough,” he remarked, emphasising the need for adaptation and confidence, especially with a young team.

The match saw chances at both ends, with Raheem Sterling’s missed opportunity and Hwang Hee-chan’s shot over the bar. The Wolves broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with Lemina’s headed goal. Doherty sealed the win in stoppage time, securing the Wolves’ reputation for success against top-six teams.

Despite Nkunku’s late goal for Chelsea, Wolves held on to claim all three points. Doherty credited the fans for the vibrant atmosphere, highlighting their impressive record against top-six teams.
