Heavy fighting was reported in Gaza on Friday as Israel’s military said it had resumed combat operations against Hamas after accusing the Palestinian militant group of violating a temporary truce by firing toward Israeli territory.
The seven-day pause, which began on Nov 24 and was extended twice, had allowed for the exchange of dozens of hostages held in Gaza for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and facilitated the entry of humanitarian aid into the shattered coastal strip.
The number of people killed in Israeli attacks since the expiration of the truce has now reached 109, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
Hundreds of people have also been wounded.
The Israeli military said Friday that it had hit “over 200 terror targets” after the end of a truce pausing fighting between it and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
“Over the last few hours, ground, air, and naval forces struck terror targets in the north and south of the Gaza Strip, including in Khan Yunis and Rafah,” it said in a statement.
