Lebanon’s parliament has elected army commander Joseph Aoun as the new president, successfully filling a presidential void that lasted more than two years.

The vote took place on January 9, 2025, following a prolonged deadlock that saw 13 attempts to elect a successor to former President Michel Aoun, whose term ended in October 2022.

Joseph Aoun, widely regarded as the preferred candidate of the United States and Saudi Arabia, received 99 votes in the second round, after initially falling short of a two-thirds majority.

His election comes at a critical time for Lebanon, which is seeking international aid for reconstruction following a recent conflict with Hezbollah and Israel.

Hezbollah had previously backed another candidate, Suleiman Frangieh, but he withdrew from the race and endorsed Aoun, paving the way for the army chief’s election.

Observers noted that Hezbollah’s diminished influence following recent conflicts and international pressure contributed to Aoun’s ascension.

In his inaugural address, Aoun pledged to implement judicial reforms, combat corruption, and strengthen state control over arms, implicitly referencing Hezbollah’s military capabilities.

He also committed to addressing border security and reconstructing areas damaged during the conflict.

Joseph Aoun, who has led the Lebanese army since 2017, will face significant challenges, including an ongoing economic crisis that has severely impacted the country’s currency and public services.

His administration will need to navigate complex domestic politics while working with international partners to stabilize Lebanon.
