Citing its support for Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas, the Maldives government has imposed a ban on the entry of Israeli passport holders into the country.
According to foreign media reports, the decision was approved by the Maldivian Parliament and ratified by President Mohamed Muizzu. The ban has taken immediate effect.
In an official statement, the President’s Office said that the amendment to the country’s immigration law was made as a condemnation of Israel’s “brutal actions” in Gaza.
Under the new law, individuals holding Israeli passports will not be allowed to enter the Maldives. However, those with dual nationality can enter using travel documents issued by other countries.
The proposal was initially introduced in May 2024 by opposition MP Mickail Ahmed Naseem. It was later approved by the Security Services Committee and received full parliamentary approval 308 days later.
Additionally, President Muizzu announced the appointment of a special envoy to assess humanitarian needs in Palestinian territories and the launch of a fundraising campaign titled “Solidarity with Palestine.”
The report adds that the Maldives will continue to push for accountability for violations of international law and raise its voice against Israeli actions on global platforms. The country remains committed to defending the rights of Palestinians and advocating for justice.
The President’s Office also reaffirmed the Maldives’ principled support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
