Margot Robbie, the Australian actress who portrayed the lead role in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster film “Barbie,” has disclosed her thoughts on the potential for a sequel following the movie’s tremendous success, grossing over $1.4 billion globally since its July 2023 release.

Contrary to the hopes of eager fans, Robbie expressed a hesitation towards the idea of a Barbie sequel.

She emphasized that the movie was not designed with a trilogy or sequel in mind, highlighting the exhaustive effort put in by the cast, crew, and director.

Robbie stated in an interview with The Associated Press, “Greta Gerwig put everything into this film, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

The Barbie film, released alongside Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” in July 2023, achieved unprecedented success and has now been dubbed the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon.

It not only became the highest-grossing film by a female director but also claimed the title of the highest-grossing movie of the year, accumulating a staggering $1.4 billion at the global box office.

Despite the massive triumph, the possibility of a Barbie sequel remains uncertain, as no confirmation has been provided by any member of the film’s team.

Greta Gerwig, the director, in a previous interview with People magazine, did not outright dismiss the idea of a sequel.

She expressed openness to the concept, particularly if it explores the broader Barbie universe without necessarily focusing on the characters from the initial movie.
