Talks between sugar mill owners and the Punjab government finally led to a breakthrough after three days of talks on Sunday.

A delegation of sugar mill owners met caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday and an agreement was finally reached.

The mill owners have agreed to sell sugar to the government at the rate of Rs140 per kilogram.

Naqvi said that the sugar acquired from the owners will be sold at Itwar bazaars and model bazaars. He added that the mill owners had agreed to start crushing season on October 28.

The chief minister said that the agreement on prices will directly benefit the consumers.

The agreement comes days after the price of sugar rose to as high as 200 across the country. Official statistics had also admitted that sugar was being sold for as much as Rs200 in many cities, with massive increases in a single week.
