On October 8, an extremely powerful earthquake struck Azad Jammu and Kashmir, centered near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan.

This devastating earthquake also affected Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6 and reached a maximum intensity of XI on the Mercalli scale, indicating extreme shaking. Its impact was felt in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, India, and China’s Xinjiang region.

The destruction was mainly due to severe upward movement of the Earth’s crust. Tragically, over 86,000 people lost their lives, a similar number were injured, and millions were forced from their homes.

This earthquake stands as the deadliest in South Asia’s history, surpassing the 1935 Quetta earthquake in terms of its devastating impact.
