Bangladesh has formally requested India to return former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to New Delhi in August amid violent protests against her government.

The acting head of Bangladesh’s foreign ministry, Touhid Hossain, confirmed that a diplomatic note was sent to India, stating the need for Hasina to face a judicial process in her home country.

The relationship between the two South Asian neighbors, historically marked by strong trade and cultural ties, has soured following Hasina’s departure.

Hussain did not provide details regarding the judicial process that Bangladesh intends to pursue.

Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, has not commented on the matter. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has called for Hasina’s return to face charges related to her alleged misconduct during her 15 years in power, including accusations of crimes against humanity and murder.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged receipt of Bangladesh’s extradition request but refrained from making any comments at this time.

Hasina has been in India for safety reasons, according to New Delhi, which has reiterated its commitment to maintaining constructive relations with Bangladesh.
