Ukraine’s parliament has stated that the nation’s security relies heavily on support from the US, praising President Donald Trump’s peacekeeping role as “decisive” in bringing an end to the three-year-long war with Russia.
A statement issued in English three days after a public row in the White House between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Washington’s support was “more crucial than ever for the Ukrainian people”.
Ukraine’s parliament said Monday that the country heavily relies on support from the US for its security while praising President Donald Trump’s peacekeeping role as “decisive” in efforts to bring an end to the war with Russia.
“The Ukrainian people desire peace more than anyone else in the world and believe that the personal role of President Donald Trump and his peacekeeping efforts will be decisive in the swift cessation of hostilities and the achievement of peace for Ukraine, Europe and the entire world,” the parliament said in a statement.
The statement came after Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged in a fiery Oval Office exchange on Friday in which Trump and Vice President JD Vance repeatedly berated Zelenskyy, alleging he is ungrateful for years of American military and economic aid for his war-ravaged nation.
“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine welcomes President Donald Trump’s initiatives to launch a negotiation process aimed at securing peace,” it said.
The parliament also expressed its “profound gratitude” to Trump, the US Congress and the American people for their “firm and consistent” support of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine underscores the necessity of further developing the strategic partnership with the United States, particularly in the exploration of critical minerals,” it said.
Trump said Monday that he does not believe a critical minerals deal with Ukraine to jointly develop the nation’s natural resources is dead amid a bitter feud with Zelenskyy.
