World Cup 2023: South Africa thrash Bangladesh by 149 runs

The Protease set a target of 383 after electing to bat first

South Africa emerged victorious after Bangladesh were all out on 233 while chasing a target of 383 set by the Protease in the 23rd match of the World Cup on Tuesday.

The Protease won the match by 149 runs after Bangladesh were sent back to the pavilion on 233 in the 45th over.

Chasing a mammoth target, Mahmudullah’s ton was not enough as other Bangladeshi batters could not stay for the crease longer at Wankhede.

Mahmudullah scored 111 runs and took as many balls. The second highest run-getter for Bangladesh was Litton Das who added 22 runs to the total.

For South Africa, Gerald Coetzee took three wickets, while Kagiso Rabada, Lizaad Williams and Marco Jansen took two wickets each

Bangladesh were in all sorts of trouble after losing three wickets on 31 runs while chasing the target set by South Africa.

Marco Jansen took two wickets as both Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto were caught by Heinrich Klaasen.

The Protease won the toss and elected to bat first, where opening batter Quinton de Kock hit 174 off 140 balls.

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller brought more firepower in the backend of the innings with Klassen smashing 90 off 49 balls while Miller was unbeaten on 34 having played 15 balls.

Together, the two batters smashed 12 maximums and three boundaries.

Skipper Aiden Markram also hit a fifty, scoring 60 off 69 deliveries as Protease posted a total of 382 over the loss of five wickets.

For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud took two wickets while Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shoriful Islam, and Shakib Al Hasan took one wicket each.

Bangladesh will try to keep their hopes of reaching the knockouts in the World Cup alive by winning today’s game.

Shakib Al Hassan is leading Bangladesh after being included once again, while South African Captain Temba Bavuma is out.

Bangladesh entered the game with three consecutive losses against England, New Zealand, and India after a win against Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, South Africa faced overcame the hiccup against the Netherlands with a convincing win over defending champions England.

Conditions are expected to be hot and dry and whoever wins the toss will likely bat first.
