An unexpected storm brought a wintry mix of weather to the New England region of New York on Saturday.

In Maine, the National Weather Service warned of dangerous travel conditions due to snow, sleet, rain, and strong winds. Some areas were expecting over a foot of snow, while others faced the risk of flooding.

While some parts of the Northeast had a mild winter with little snow, New England witnessed a surprising winter storm on Saturday, that caused snow, sleet, rain, and strong winds.

This messy mix created hazardous travel conditions across the region. The National Weather Service warned drivers to be extra cautious, especially in areas where snow and ice were accumulating on the roads.

The storm wasn’t the same for everyone in New England. Ski resorts in western Maine and New Hampshire’s White Mountains were excited about the prospect of up to two feet of new snow, hoping the extension of their ski season.

The rain and melting snow sparked fears of flooding, particularly in southern New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and southeast Massachusetts. The weather service issued flood warning as some rivers were expected to overflow their banks.

The strong winds also caused problems, with gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour predicted in New York City. These winds, along with the heavy rain, led to flight cancellations at airports in the New York area.

Even farther west, the storm brought more winter weather to the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Here, some areas could see up to four feet of snow and wind gusts exceeding 80 miles per hour.
