Gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenades have ambushed a police convoy in eastern Pakistan’s Punjab province, killing at least 11 officers and wounding seven, authorities say.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in the Rahim Yar Khan district’s Kacha town.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating the threat of dacoits, particularly in the riverine areas of the region.
They had established a camp in Machika to monitor the movement of dacoits. The officers were returning from their duty when they were ambushed by around 25 armed dacoits.
A large contingent of police from across the district was mobilized to the crime scene, led by District Police Officer Imran.
The officers were ambushed while on patrol in a deserted area in search of robbers who operate in the region. Police said the gunmen were likely robbers and not members of an armed group.
