China and Russia vetoed a draft resolution sponsored by the United States, while a second Russian-backed resolution failed to secure sufficient votes in favour, deepening the Security Council’s deadlock over any unified response to address the crisis in Gaza and Israel.
The US-led draft pro-Israel and anti-Palestinian resolution failed to pass owing to a negative vote by permanent Security Council members China and Russia.
The development came at a time when global powers are polarized on the Israel-Gaza war as the death toll on Palestinian side mounted to nearly 6,000 including over 2,000 children and 1,400 killed in Israel. President Joe Biden said he did not believe in the death toll of Palestinians shared by the Hamas-led Gaza Health Ministry.
Ten members of the Council voted for the draft resolution and three against (China, Russia and UAE), with two abstentions (Brazil and Mozambique).
Russia said that the resolution did not carry words to condemn the death of Palestinians.
As per UNSC rules, a ‘no’ vote from any one of the five permanent members of the Council stops action on any measure put before it.
The body’s permanent members are China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
