Discover Thomasville’s iconic landmark, the Big Chair! Standing tall as a replica of the classic Duncan Phyfe armchair, this colossal structure, built by Thomasville Furniture Industries in 1950, has an intriguing history.

Before the current chair took its place, its predecessor, erected in September 1922, stood at a height of 13 feet 6 inches. Crafted from pine, the original chair, unfortunately, succumbed to wear and tear, leading to its dismantling in 1936.

The current Big Chair, a towering 30 feet in height with a seat width of 10 feet 6 inches, is a sturdy creation made from steel, concrete, and an Indiana limestone base. Its grandeur and significance soared in 1960 when then Vice-Presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson captured attention by waving to locals from atop this monumental seat during his presidential campaign.
