The Tunisian coast guard has retrieved the bodies of 13 migrants off Tunisia and rescued 1,867 others in a number of separate incidents in the Mediterranean, the national guard said on Sunday.
With the improvement in weather, the number of migrant boats heading from Tunisia to the Italian coast has increased significantly.
Authorities also apprehended 14 persons suspected of involvement in mediation and human smuggling activities. Additionally, they seized 16 iron boats, 47 marine engines, and uncovered a clandestine workshop dedicated to manufacturing boats intended for illegal migration purposes.
The increase in migrant crossings underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Tunisia and other Mediterranean countries in managing irregular migration flows.
Last year, the region witnessed a staggering influx of migrants attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean. Tragically, more than 1,300 lives were lost at sea, according to data compiled by the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights.
