The E-Visa applies to a broad array of immigration pathways: students (including short‑term stays), Global Talent schemes, international sportspeople, skilled workers (notably in health and care), charity and creative workers, youth mobility, and business mobility routes. Dependents and visitor‑type applicants still require traditional visa stickers.
This digital initiative is part of the UK’s larger goal to phase out physical immigration documents entirely. Britain emphasizes that these reforms will streamline verification for employers and landlords while bolstering border security—though critics argue it may widen access gaps for applicants lacking reliable internet or digital literacy.
Meanwhile, across Pakistan, Afghan refugees face increasing uncertainty. With the U.S. refugee resettlement program on hold, about 20,000 Afghans, many already vetted, are stranded in limbo. Refugee advocates are calling on Pakistan to extend their residency permissions as deportation deadlines approach.
Afghan women who were designated for Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) or other U.S. programs report being left vulnerable following the resettlement suspension. Many fear arrest or forced return to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, despite earlier assurances of protection.
This disparity highlights a striking contrast: while digital advancements ease movement for some Pakistani nationals, Afghan refugees remain sidelined in years-long waits without clear government support. Their uncertain status continues amid mounting pressure on Pakistan’s immigration framework.
